Future of this blog

Dear friends and readers,

as you probably have noticed already, my posting pace has slowed down quite a bit during the last few months. There are many reasons to that, our little baby being just one of them. Besides taking care of the tiny one, I have tried to reduce the time I have spent on my laptop. I also have not been able to dedicate so much time for snail mail, so there has not been that much to post about.

And now, finally, I started new studies a couple of weeks ago that will requiere a lot of my time. Next month I will continue working as the maternity leave is over... Well, you see that there are many things going on in my life at the moment.

At first I thought I would just delete this blog as it seems like I will not have time for it anymore. But then... I don't know. I feel like needing to have this little place of mine where to babble about this dear hobby with other like-minded people (thank you for being there!).

How should I proceed? Would there be readers for a blog that publishs a post once in a month?

I have also started to think that sharing "just" photos of my in- and outgoing mail is not what I would like this blog to be. On the other hand, I should stay realistic and think of my current situation. What am I able to do at the moment?

I would love to hear your ideas.

Hyvät ystävät ja lukijat,

kuten olette ehkä jo huomanneet, on päivitystahtini hidastunut melkoisesti viimeisten kuukausien aikana. Syitä on useita; lapsemme syntymä on vain yksi niistä. Vauvanhoidon ohella olen pyrkinyt vähentämään koneella viettämääni aikaa. Minulla ei myöskään ole ollut yhtä paljon aikaa etanapostille kuin ennen vauvaa, joten postattavaakaan ei oikein ole ollut.

Nyt viimeisimpänä aloitin uudet korkeakouluopinnot, jotka tulevat viemään ison osan ajastani. Ensi kuussa palaan takaisin työelämään äitiyslomani päätyttyä... No, ymmärrätte varmaan; nyt on monta rautaa tulessa.

Ensin ajattelin vain tuhota koko blogin, koska näyttää pahasti siltä, ettei minulla ole enää aikaa tämän päivittämiseen. Ja sitten kuitenkin... Enpä tiedä. Tuntuu siltä, että tarvitsen tämän oman pienen paikkani, jossa höpistä etanapostista muiden samanmielisten kanssa (kiitos, että olette siellä!).

Miten minun tulisi mielestäsi menetellä? Olisiko sellaisella blogilla lukijoita, joka julkaisee postauksen per kuukausi?

Olen myös alkanut hiljakseen ajatella, ettei "vain" saapuneiden ja lähtevien postien esitteleminen ole oikein sitä, mitä tältä bloggaamiselta haluaisin. Toisaalta nyt pitäisi pitää jalat maassa ja olla realistinen: mihin minulla on tällä hetkellä rahkeita?

Olisi huikeaa kuulla teidän ajatuksianne!

Expecting some cards to arrive!

 

The Day has arrived!

I set my Postcrossing account inactive last summer, when we left for holidays. Then I felt I had too much to do with work and stuff, and decided to leave it that way. Weeks, then months passed by... and in the end came the idea: what about keeping the account inactive to see how long I can keep on sending postcards?

Well, I've now reached my limit; I have sent 270 postcards more than I have received. I set my account active today - and thought it would be interesting to share with you guys how fast and from where the cards will start to pour in. Stay tuned!

Hetki on koittanut!

Pistin Postcrossing-tilini epäaktiiviseksi viime kesänä, kun lähdimme lomareissulle. Matkalta palattuamme olin sen verran kiireinen töiden ja kaikenlaisen muun puuhastelun kanssa, että päätin jatkaa hiljaiseloa korttipuolella "vielä hetken". Viikot ja lopulta kuukaudet vilistivät ohitse... kunnes lopulta sain Idean: mitäs jos pitäisin tilin epäaktiivisena niin kauan, etten enää pysty itse lähettämään postikortteja?

No, maaginen raja on nyt täyttynyt: olen lähettänyt 270 postikorttia enemmän kuin saanut. Palautin tilini takaisin aktiiviseksi tänään, ja ajattelin, että olisi mielenkiintoista jakaa teidän kanssanne triviaa siitä, kuinka nopeasti ja ennen kaikkea mistä kortteja alkaa luukkuun tupsahdella. Pysykääpä siis kuulolla!

Received letters, weeks 44-46/2016

Long time no see! My mailbox has not been the busiest one lately, mainly because of The Life that has taken too much of my time. This week I've finally started to prepare my Christmas mails to friends all over the world - hoping to finish them all in time! I realized some days ago that there are not that many days left for me to mail everything out - that's crazy! Don't you feel like Christmas coming earlier and earlier every year?!

I've gotten two lovely letters since the last penpal entry in this blog - here they are!

Pitkästä aikaa! Postilaatikossani ei ole viime aikoina käynyt varsinaisesti mikään kuhina, johtuen lähinnä ns. Elämästä, joka on vienyt vähän turhan paljon aikaani hiljattain. Aloitin tällä viikolla lopultakin joulupostieni valmistelun - vastaanottajina ystäväni ympäri maailmaa. Toivon todella, että ehdin saada kaiken ajoissa valmiiksi - tajusin nimittäin muutama päivä sitten, ettei minulla ole enää ihan hirvittävän paljon aikaa saada kaikkea postituskuntoon - huh! Tuntuuko teistäkin, että joulu tulee vuosi vuodelta nopeammin ja nopeammin?!

Completing the collection

It took me about three years to complete this set of square-shaped coffee cards... The last one arrived from Canada last week. Oh, how I love these (and kinda hope that there would or would not be more cards to this series)!

Kolmisen vuotta siihen meni, mutta nyt tämä neljän neliönmutoisen kahvikortin settini on täydellinen! Viimeinen kortti saapui viime viikolla Kanadasta. Rakastan näitä (ja tavallaan sekä toivon että en, että tähän sarjaan kuuluisi lisääkin kortteja)!

Memory of Barcelona

Remember how I wrote earlier, that I usually send at least one card to myself, too, when traveling or attendind meet-ups? Well, here's the one from Barcelona. Hope they'll finish the project of La Sagrada Familia in our lifetime; we're already planning to visit it again then!

Muistatteko, miten kirjoitin aikaisemmin tavastani lähettää kortti/kortteja myös itselleni reissun päältä tai miiteistä? No, tässäpä Barcelonan-tuliainen, joka kolahti luukusta alkuviikosta. Toivottavasti La Sagrada Familian rakennustyöt saadaan päätökseen meidän elinaikanamme; olemme nimittäin jo suunnitelleet uusintavisiittiä valmiiseen katedraaliin!

It's Venusaur!

Received this cutie from Germany on Tuesday - it bring such nice memories from my childhood... We used to have lots of Pokémon stuff with my sister, and even had a homepage related to them. Love this card!

Tiny hiatus

10 years of Postcrossing

Today I started postcrossing. Oh boys, I'm so excited. I already sent out five cards, and there's one more waiting in the bag. 2x USA, Brasil, Iran, Austria (tag) and Germany. This sounded like my cup of tea, so I definitely had to give it a try.

The paragraph above is from my diary, dated on the 29th May, 2006 - 10 years ago.

TEN. YEARS. It's a decade, and I can not believe it. Since that day, there has not been a year that I would have passed without sending at least one postcrossing postcard (I had, of course, been an avid postcard fan a long before discovering postcrossing.com).

These ten years have brought so much good to my everyday life, and I'm not talking only about the cards itself, but mainly about the other people behind them. I have been priviledged and even met a great deal of fellow-postcrossers on the way.  There are lot of people I can call friends, even though we would not have met ever - thanking postcards for that as well.

I'm excited for having been a part of the project for so long - and, hopefully, this is just the start.

Yllä oleva tekstipätkä on katkelma päiväkirjamerkinnästäni, joka on päivätty 29. toukokuuta 2006 - siis tasan kymmenen vuotta sitten.

KYMMENEN. VUOTTA. Se on jo vuosikymmen, mitä en voi uskoa. Tuon kyseisen päivän jälkeen ei ole mennyt vuottakaan ilman yhtä ainutta postcrossing-postikorttia (olin toki innokas kortteilija jo paljon ennen postcrossing.comiin eksymistäni).

Nämä kymmenen vuotta ovat tuoneet mukanaan uskomattoman paljon hyvää arkipäiviini - enkä nyt puhu ainoastaan korteista, vaan lähinnä ihmisistä niiden takana. Olen ollut etuoikeutettu saadessani tavata kasvotusten useita kanssa-crossaajia tämän matkani aikana. Ja edelleen kiitos korttien, on olemassa paljon ihmisiä, joita rohkenen kutsua ystäviksi, vaikkemme olisi koskaan tavanneetkaan.

Olen todella innoissani siitä, että olen ollut tässä projekstissa mukana jo näin kauan - ja tämä on toivottavasti vasta alkua.

Mystery card from China

 

I received this card back in August/September, 2015. It's been dated in Beijing on the 1st August 2015 and I have no idea why it was sent to me. I keep track on all my swap cards and this was not on the list. It does not have an ID-number and the PC-team was not able to identify any possible sender.

I hate this, but looks like this is a total mystery and will also remain one.

Sain tämän kortin elo-syyskuussa 2015. Se on päivätty Pekingissä 1.8.2015 eikä minulla ole aavistustakaan, miksi kortti on lähetetty minulle. Pidän listaa kaikista swappikorteista, enkä odottanut tällaista keneltäkään. Kortissa ei myöskään ole ID-numeroa, eikä PC-tiimi onnistunt selvittämään sille lähettäjää.

Näyttää siltä, että tämä on ja myös jää täydeksi mysteeriksi.

We have a Postcrossing association!

 24. lokakuuta 2015 oli merkittävä päivä suomalaisessa Postcrossing-historiassa; tuolloin nimittäin perustettiin maailman ensimmäinen rekisteröity postcrossingyhdistys! Olen ylpeä voidessani sanoa, että perustamiskokous pidettiin täällä Tampereella. Yhdistyksen nimeksi tuli ytimekkäästi Suomen postcrossingyhdistys ry.

Yhdistyksen tarkoitus on edistää postcrossing-harrastusta Suomessa ja lisätä sen tunnettuutta. Tätä tavoitetta toteutetaan mm. järjestämällä erilaisia tapahtumia ja matkoja, osallistumalla ensipäivätapahtumiin ja ylläpitämällä laajaa nettisivustoa.

Tervetuloa tutustumaan yhdistyksen sivuihin!

Kirjoittaja on vuoden 2015-2016 hallituksen varajäsen.

 The 24th of October, 2015 was a significant day in the Finnish Postcrossing history - that was the very day when the first Postcrossing Association in the world was registered. I'm proud to write that the constituent meeting took place in my home city, Tampere. The association goes with the name Suomen Postcrossingyhdisrys ry.

The purpose of the association (called Finnish Postcrossing Friends, reg., in English) is to contribute to the Postcrossing hobby in Finland and gain more visibility for it; to organize events and meetings, to participate in the First Day Issue events, to run and update a comprehensive website etc.

Some parts of the website will be translated into English at some point. Stay tuned!
